National Botanic Gardens - Kilmacurragh are located in near village of Kilbride, just 3,5 km off N11 (turn right opposite Beehive pub) in east County Wicklow. Arboretum is situated on 18th century estate which was the seat of the Acton family for almost three centuries. The most of trees we can admire there, were planted in 19th Century by siblings, Thomas and Janet Acton. Thanks to their friendship with David Moore and his son Sir Frederick Moore, curators of the National Botanic Garden’s at Glasnevin they had also excellent advisory and competent support. Favorable microclimate of the County Wicklow, its acidic brown soil, moderate winter temperatures and low rainfall proved to be great environment for many specimen of trees, especially rhododendrons. The Acton family sold thee estate in 1944 and then the owner changed several times. Unfortunately, at that time the house and garden fell into decline. In 1996, gardens at Kilmacurragh became part of the National Botanic Gardens of Ireland with protection of OPW. Unfortunately, at that time the gardens were neglected and the Queen Anne-style house fell into decline (damaged by two fires, in 1978 and 1982). In 1996, the gardens at Kilmacurragh became part of the National Botanic Gardens of Ireland with protection of OPW and restoration of the arboretum has began. Following ten years were spent rescuing valuable trees, and during this time many of botanical treasures and champion trees were rediscovered. An Oriental Spruce on the front lawn, a 45m Wellingtonia Tree, a magnificent Magnolia Campbellii from India and a Mexican Cypress are among the most beautiful of unique collection of champion trees. In most recent times, the wild flower meadows have been reinstated' an avenue of monkey puzzles and herbaceous borders have been planted, as well as many new different plants and trees. Kilmacurragh Arboretum is a place which is really worth to visit, especially for tree lovers and gardening enthusiasts (every single plant and tree is signposted), and in particular that free guided tours are available every day from April, at 12pm and 3pm. There is also nice picnic area, and the new coffee shop will be opened for summer of 2015.
