Kilfenora Cathedral and Crosses
West Ireland | County Clare
Kilfenora Cathedral is located on the plateau of Burren in County Clare. It was built in about 1189 on the site of an early monastery founded by St Fachtna in 6th century. The cathedral was simple nave-and-chancel building. The chancel has very well preserved east window of Transitional style and some other noteworthy stonemasons works including 14th-century effigies of bishops. With no doubt, the main attraction on the site is the collection of 12th-century High Crosses. Originally there were seven crosses of which one was moved to Killaloe in 1821. Three of the remaining crosses are still complete, including most famous, the Doorty Cross (2.83m) and tallest, 4.6m high West Cross.
