Carrowntemple Grave Slabs

Northwest Ireland | County Sligo

Carrowntemple Grave Slabs are located on the graveyard of ruined medieval church of Kilfree, near Gurteen, in County Sligo. There are twelve replicas of fourteen early Christian grave slabs, which have been found to the south and east of the church within the old graveyard. Most of them are Cross Slabs but some have different patterns as spirals, and abstract designs. One of the slabs depicts a human. The exact date of creation is unknown but stylistically they fit to date from between 800 and 1000 A.D. The reason why original slabs were replaced with replicas was fact that in 1984 five of them where stolen. Fortunatelly, they were recovered in 1986 and later that year, the remaining exposed slabs on site were taken into care by Sligo County Council. The replicas were made between 1990 and 1992 by sculptor Cillian Rogers. Two of the original slabs have been on display in the National Museum of Ireland - Archaeology.
