Cape Clear Island - known as the Queen of Carbery's Hundred Isles is located 14,5km off Baltimore in west county Cork. The Island has a rich natural and archaeological history and is a renowned birdwatchers paradise (is home to Ireland's only manned bird observatory, which has been maintaining a daily species log since 1959r). It's 4.8km long and 1.6km wide, so can be enjoyed by day trip, but longer visit is required to see the entire island. In good weather you can see the unique Fastnet Rock Lighthouse which lies 6.5km southwest of Cape Clear. The surrounding seas abound in natural creatures, whales, dolphins and basking sharks are regular visitors. The Island is a great base for many water based activities as diving or sea kayaking. There are two thriving Irish Summer Colleges, regular traditional music and a range of festivals and events throughout the year including the annual May Walking Talking Festival and renowned Cape Clear International Storytelling Festival. The Islands supports a strong local craft industry and literary scene with items and publications available in the craft and information centre convenient to main pier. Cape Clear Island offers the year round lifeline ferry service from Baltimore (in the summer time you can also get there from Schull), B&Bs, hostel, campsite offering yurts and tipis, pubs and restaurants.
