Killadangan Megalithic Complex
West Ireland | County Mayo
The megalithic complex of Killadangan is situated on the southern shore of Clew Bay, about 5km west of Westport and 2km east of Murrisk (road R335) and is part of Clew Bay Archaeological Trail. The monuments, probably date from the Bronze Age and consist a Stone Row, a Stone Pair, four Standing Stones and possible remains of a fulacht fiadh (bronze-age cooking area) and Stone Circle, suggesting that it was a major worship place. The most remarkable part of this megalithic complex is Stone Row, which include five standing stones (four still standing and one fallen) which increase the height from north (0.5m) to south (1.2m). During the winter solstice, on 21st of December about 1:50pm, the sun is directly in line with the stones and dips into small niche of east shoulder of Croagh Patrick before disappearing shortly behind the mountain.
