Carrigafoyle Castle is a 15th century fortress situated on southern bank of Shannon estuary, near village of Ballylongford in north County Kerry. This large, five storey tower-house stands on rock in Shannon River and is surrounded by double defensive walls with moat inside and outside, was built in the 1490s by O'Connors of Kerry, very powerful irish clan. History of the castle is very short and dramatic. During the Second Desmond Rebellion (Elizabethan Wars), the stronghold, was base for Gerald Fitzgerald's (15th Earl of Desmond) rebels and that's why it was targeted by English army. At Easter 1580, the Troops of William Pelham supported by a fleet of 3 ships under the command of Sir William Winter, began the siege. The fortress was defended by 50 Irish rebels, along with sixteen Spanish ally soldiers. After two days of artillery bombardment english took control over the castle, and all defenders were executed. Destruction after the siege were so large, that the Carrigafoyle Castle was never again inhabited.

The castle has been partially restored and some internal rooms and staircases are accessible to explore. Reaching the top floor, you will have stunning views of Shannon Estuary.
